Switzerland by Train in 7 Days: Zurich, Lucerne & Interlaken
This seven-day Switzerland train itinerary links Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and Bern. It is designed around a small number of bases, with room for weather changes and ordinary arrival-day delays. Treat the sequence as a planning example: book the actual trains, accommodation and activities that fit your dates.
Days 1 and 2: arrive in Zurich, then travel to Lucerne
On day 1, arrive in Zurich and keep the programme light. If arriving by air, search from Zürich Flughafen to your hotel area or Zürich HB. Explore the city if your arrival leaves enough time; avoid tying an expensive restricted rail departure to an uncertain flight arrival.
On day 2, continue from Zurich to Luzern. Leave time for the old town and lakefront after checking into accommodation. A boat excursion or mountain activity is optional, with its own operating schedule and ticket coverage; it is not automatically included in a city-to-city rail fare.
Day 3: Lucerne and central Switzerland
Use a second day in Lucerne for a local excursion suited to the weather and your interests. Keep an alternative town or lake activity if mountain visibility is poor. Check the final return service before leaving your base.
A slower day avoids moving hotels every morning and helps families with luggage. It also gives you a realistic basis for comparing tickets with a rail pass: a day spent mostly on foot is different from a day of several long train journeys.
Day 4: cross the Brünig route to Interlaken
Take the Luzern–Interlaken Express to Interlaken Ost. Zentralbahn describes the regular journey as about 1 hour 50 minutes; use the timetable for your date to confirm the departure and any service changes.
The route travels through the Brünig area and via Meiringen and Brienz. If you want a stop along the way, check that the ticket permits the break of journey and that the later service works for your plans. This train is different from the GoldenPass Express to Montreux.
Day 5: choose one Jungfrau-region outing
From Interlaken Ost, plan a day towards Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. Jungfraujoch can be considered as a separate, longer mountain excursion rather than an automatic add-on to every valley visit. Check the weather, ticket coverage and operator reservation conditions.
Keep this day flexible if you can. Travel to a mountain summit, a village walk and several cable-car rides can make an overloaded programme. Choose one main objective and allow time for transfers and the return trip.
Days 6 and 7: Bern, then departure
On day 6, travel towards Bern and explore the old town. Either stay overnight or continue to a departure-area hotel, depending on the time of your flight or onward international train. Include luggage storage and hotel check-in in your day plan.
On day 7, travel to the exact departure airport or station. Zürich Flughafen is different from Zürich HB. Leave an appropriate margin for airport check-in or a separately booked connection rather than selecting the latest theoretically possible train.
Price the itinerary before choosing a pass
Compare point-to-point tickets, the Swiss Half Fare Card plus eligible tickets, and a suitable Swiss Travel Pass. Include the full airport journeys and any mountain or boat extras, with the same class and passenger ages in each comparison.
If you add Zermatt, Montreux or an international connection, remove another stop or extend the trip. A scenic rail map shows possibilities; it does not mean every destination comfortably fits into one week.
